After the storms in April 2011, I decided the next Home I built for myself would have a shelter. I decided that I
would take the necessary steps to protect my family. The pictures shown here are
of the shelter for our house. We started with a 3’ wide by 1’ deep footing. We
tied (3) #4 rebar with vertical # 4 bars for block cells. We laid 12” concrete
block to ceiling height tying rebar vertical through cells. For the ceiling we
bent the vertical bars and tied a rebar mesh. After ceiling forms were installed
we pumped 11 yards of concrete in walls and ceiling in one continuous pour. The
ceiling has 10 inches of concrete. We also installed a commercial grade metal in
swing door. This door frame has masonry ties and has been slushed on each side
with type s mortar. We will also
through bolt and anchor reinforcing brackets on each side of door frame to
insert a bar for extra precaution.
We will enter shelter through
master closet. The concrete floor matches to the subfloor of closet. This allows
for carpet to be continuous into shelter. The interior will be drywall with a
vent fan and light. We will also install a cable outlet for a small wall mount
TV. When completed the storm shelter will be hidden. From the outside it will be
covered with siding and have a brick veneer foundation. On the inside it will
have carpet and drywall.
